The media has been driving me absolutely crazy these last two weeks. The manner in which they have unabashedly attacked Sarah Palin and her family is deplorable, and their blatant bias is intolerable. I was discussing the media coverage of the two conventions with one of my brothers yesterday and he was remarking about the vast differences of the coverage by CNN of the two events. I watched the PBS coverage of the speeches last night and it made me absolutely sick. Whatever happened to fair and balanced? They had a series of liberal journalists the proceeded to rip apart Romney after his speech, but there was absolutely no counter argument.
Sorry for the rant. Just had to get that out of my system.
I Tivoed the speeches last night, but since I got home so late I was only able to watch Romney and Palin, and I thought their speeches were fantastic. I couldn’t be more pleased. I did delve a few minutes into Huckabee’s as well, which wasn’t that bad. I noticed he couldn’t resist doing the most subtle jab at Romney by once again pointing out that McCain was his second pick. Not bad though, in light of his numerous recent underhand jabs.
I’ve been amused by the coverage of Romney’s speech this morning. The writers are making the appearance of being unbiased, but can’t help inserting their true feelings somewhere along the way.
“Is a Supreme Court decision liberal or conservative that awards Guantanamo terrorists with constitutional rights? It’s liberal!” he said, as the crowd joined him in response. “Is a government liberal or conservative that puts the interests of the teachers union ahead of our children? It’s liberal! Is a Congress liberal or conservative that stops nuclear power plants and offshore drilling making us more and more dependent on Middle Eastern tyrants? It’s liberal! . . .
“We need change all right, change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington!”
And the stupid quote of the day:
In at least one case, however, Romney seemed to venture too far, saying that liberals want to “grow government and raise taxes to put more people on Medicaid.” Dependency, he said, “is death to initiative, to risk-taking, and opportunity.”
The Massachusetts health reform law, which Romney took credit for helping to create and signed into law in 2006, depends on expanding the Medicaid program to extend health insurance to more people. Since it was implemented, Medicaid rolls have increased by 72,000, and 176,000 people have obtained insurance partially subsidized with Medicaid money.
How about mentioning that the money used for this project came from the money that the government was giving away to pay for those who show up in the emergency room without health insurance and still get covered?
The Boston Globe also has the picture of the day:

And finally, from the Relentless WSJ: Romney Takes Aim at Michelle Obama One, Romney’s dig at Michelle was just one comment, not the entire focus of his speech. Two, I agree that family members of the candidate of the family should be left out, UNLESS they are actively getting on stage and campaigning for the candidate. Equally I would agree that Ann Romney and her sons were fair game because they did so as well. Michelle Obama is an open target as far as I’m concerned.
UPDATE: Obama adviser Anita Dunn accused the McCain campaign in a statement of using Romney to violate a verbal agreement that family members are off limits. “Mitt Romney’s attack on a candidate’s wife is as pathetic as his failed presidential campaign,” Dunn said.
I am in no way hoping that McCain fails so that Romney could have a clear shot at 2012, and there is one big reason for that: OBAMA. I would rather that Romney was never heard of again than to face an Obama presidency. He is so far to the left of anything we have ever seen, the Clintons included.
BUT, I am anxious and excited for a second run by Governor Romney, whether it be 2012 or 2016.
Lastly, I’ve got some final comments of the Palin poll in the left side bar. The purpose of the poll was to gauge how Romney supporters felt about the Palin selection but after reviewing my site’s traffic sources I’ve had a huge influx of new visitors who googled “Palin poll”. In fact they make a far majority of people who have voted and there is no reason to believe that they represent the Romney crowd. I’m inclined to believe that many of them are possibly liberals who are attempting to make the VP pick look as bad as possible.
If you haven’t voted yet, do so on the left sidebar. (If you’re reading this at PlanetRomney.org you need to click on the link above to actually come to TheMittBlog.com to vote in the poll.)
I must say that I am quite surprised with the results of the poll so far. I know that a lot of Romney supporters were eager to have Romney on the ticket, but I didn’t realize it would be a deal-breaker for so many. Granted the sampling is not that large, but there already seems to be a pattern.
If the results were weighted +2 for ‘ecstatic’ to -2 for ‘Mac just lost my vote’, we would have a total of 41 positive points and 43 negative points for a net -2. (note: 60 total votes so far)
I believe (and hope) that most of those who have written off McCain because of his veep pick will come around. I think as we start seeing a lot more of Obama and his dangerous platforms that most will return.
Some post-primary polling in Utah comes to mind. I recall reports immediately after Romney dropped out of the primaries that showed McCain polling extremely low in Utah which was hugely supportive of Romney. The result in fact showed him just a fraction higher than Obama with most of the crowd in the ‘undecided’ category. Fortunately, primary bitterness has worn off in Utah and clearer heads are prevailing. The polls for Utah now show McCain up 62% to 23%, one of the largest pro-McCain gaps in the country.
Hopefully we’ll see some more of that as November nears.
Claims that this election is going to be a landslide are turning out to be utterly untrue. I think we can thank the ineptitude of Obama, who Americans are coming to find out is purely form-over-function. Today’s electoral map shows Obama falling, for the first time, below the 270 electoral votes required to win the election! Ohio, with it’s 20 electoral votes is the state that most recently turned red to bring about the change.
The count: Obama 264, McCain 261 with VA as the only state in a perfect tie.
States that have turned red in the last several weeks: CO(5), FL(27), IN(11) , MT(3), NV(5), OH(20).
The two states that the Dems have picked up since: NM(5), IA(7). Iowa still sore about Huckabee losing?
I am a confessed Huck’s Army Troll. A few weeks ago I knew that I would soon get banned so I set up a few other accounts so I could still have access to some of the utilities that come with membership (ie. be able to see posts since your most recent visit, look-up profile info, etcetera). I’ve kept my posting to an absolute minimum, only a couple, and have avoided defending Romney in any way so that I wouldn’t get banned again.
SOOO…..I got an e-mail in my account today. It’s entirety is shown below without adulteration. My guess is that the e-mail was sent by HA member called Debra because she attended the meeting with McCain that’s discussed below.
Why am I posting this? Well, up until this morning I was doing my best to make amends with the Huck crowd (I’m afraid this will ruin any hope of that now), but Huckabee’s comment on TV the last two days, coupled with this e-mail from some of his most dedicated supporters has convinced me that they don’t want to be team players and they should be exposed for their true aspirations. I have said repeated, that I will support whatever the GOP ticket may be, even if were Huckabee, for the benefit of the nation. These are very serious times, and we can in no way afford to hand the leadership of our country over to Obama.
And now the email sent to all of the Huck’s Army members: (emphasis below is mine)
HUCKS ARMY ATTENTION! ACTION ALERT!
Express our support for Huckabee and the values and type of leadership we
need to the Republican party leadership.
MI Congressman Fred Upton, from the 6th District, has John McCain’s ear.
Fred is McCain’s trusted friend and advisor. They are fishing buddies and
have been close for years. It is very important that we contact Fred and
let him know:
WE WILL NOT VOTE FOR A MCCAIN TICKET UNLESS:
1) Mike Huckabee is the VP; or
2) Mike Huckabee is the KEY NOTE SPEAKER at the National GOP Convention
Know that our meetings here in Michigan with McCain prompted this urgent
action–
Romney is being shoved down our throats here, and misinformation about us
is rampant.
In addition, you may know that this also happened at one of the meetings:
“Several in attendance reported to me that Sen. Lindsey Graham seriously
asked if social conservatives would support a vice president who favors
abortion on demand. They were shocked the question even had to be asked,
and alienated that the McCain campaign appears to be even considering it.”
–Gary Glenn, Mich. American Family Assn. President
So now, we know what McCain thinks of us and our issues. He is only
concerned with catering to the independent voters. We, who supported Mike
Huckabee, the millions of voters who earned him a 2nd place in delegate
count–are being ignored by McCain. McCain must know that he will LOSE not
only Michigan without us, but the election. At this point, he does not
HAVE US. We’ve tried repeatedly to reach out to him, and he has ignored
us.
Fred can be reached at: 269-385-0039 or http://www.house.gov/upton/
Ask Fred to carry our voices to McCain NOW. URGENT!!
Is this blackmail? a hijacking? extortion? What is it?
I very much want a pro-life candidate to be on the ticket, but not at the cost of putting an uber-liberal pro-abortionist actually into the office. That’s just ludicrous and childish.
Thoughts on the letter
Gary Glenn is a royal loser, but for once I agree with his statement.
Huckabee only gained 2nd in delegate votes after Romney had left the race for a month, and given some of his away to McCain. One of the states (I think MI) actually reassigned theirs at that point. So the statement ‘Huck came in second’ is not actually true.
I wonder if Huckabee followers are starting to realize why they had such a civil relationship with McCain during the primaries. It’s because they both needed each other to bring down Romney. Huckabee was a ‘team’ player then. Why not now? Oh, because no one is on his team anymore.
They may be right about McCain catering to independent voters. That is somewhat worrisome to me. Not that we don’t need independent voters, because we desperately do. But we shouldn’t gain them by giving into liberal notions. Instead lets win them on issues where they most likely align with us: energy, and foreign policy
Tell me, am I wrong here?
~Nate Gunderson
P.S. My goal in starting this blog is not to duke it out with Huck and Co. It is wearisome and unpleasant. So I’m done. I promise no more posts about the subject for at least a couple of weeks, unless Huckabee makes more statements about Romney. Here’s hoping Huckabee’s Fox show fails and he slips into obscurity. Maybe he can make a movie and get fat. Maybe a beard.
I’d like to give a little recognition to Huckabee supporters, more specifically members of Huck’s Army, for a major change in tone and verbiage. Though this won’t immediately patch things up, and it’s lasting power is uncertain, it’s a great place to start.
I think there are a few possible factors that have brought this about. First I think the public beating they’re getting from the media calling them bigots has caused them to try to prove they are not (I’m not saying they are in general, just a very vocal small percentage). Secondly, I think they are seeing that this is tearing up the GOP and want to do their part to correct it. Third, for some the turmoil is eating them up, and a few even feel guilty for some things they’ve said. Lastly, I think more and more they are coming to realize that Obama is indeed worse than the possibility of a McCain/Romney ticket. No matter the cause, the change, for me, is gladly welcomed.
I think we as Romney supporters should follow suit (some of us already have). We don’t need to falsely claim that there is absolutely no bigotry on the part of Huckabee supporters, but be very, VERY careful not to paint them all with a broad brush and lump them all in with the small few bigotous perpetrators. No one likes being painted with a broad brush, and it only leads to strong and negative reaction which has a snowballing effect.
To both Romney and Huckabee supporters alike I say let’s put aside our difference and focus on the real threat to America at this time which is Barack Obama. How is this done? Well I have made a determination to promote McCain despite my vast differences with him. I’ve even determined that were Huckabee on the ticket I would do the same, and believe me I have no love for Huckabee. But let’s face it, no matter who is on the ticket we will not win unless we have the complete support of ALL the factions underneath the big tent. If we elect to punish the party (ie not vote, promote Obama) because it has decided put forth a candidate or VP not of our choosing, we do so at peril of suffering a much worse fate: President Obama.
Here are some quotes from Huck’s Army forums that I was referring to above:
I admit I posted at race42008.com and posted some dumb things myself. I admit I posted a couple dumb things on this board as well. I really regret doing that and I sincerly apoligise for any childish post I posted here and there. I need to learn how to control my passion. I felt deaply hurt by the hatred posted at race42008.com by the Romney supporters. I know that is no excuse for my childish behavior and sinking lower than them.
Mrs.P:
I went to that site and tried to make amends.
I think we should try to maintain a friendly relationship with Romney’s supporters. The better that relationship is, the less chance there is that people like the Washington Post will attack our man.
I am really going to try to be positive - state why I like my candidate and stop throwing darts at the person whose candidacy I dislike. I know I’m slow and others have said the same thing before, but I want to stop contributing to the war.
SeekingGod:
the media is loving the fued between us — they are furthering the divide and I dont want to participate or respond any longer.
Some may disagree with me, but I know I dont want to walk with this bitterness/anger in my heart anymore. And I dont want my words or actions to stir up others towards anger and to fuel the fued between us.
TheValuesVoter:
To any Romney supporters out there …
Both of us know what it is like to passionately support our guy and see him not go all the way. Both of our guys have things that they are very good at and have good families. We continue to disagree on a number of issues, especially on who we could support. But we’ve fought long enough and let’s stop fighting.
I am going to try to spend my energy talking up my guy intead of talking yours down. I hope you do the same. But this “war” just needs to end.
We continue to disagree on major issues. But, in the mean time, let’s talk about football or something else we can agree about.
By the way, neither me or most of us ever opposed your guy even in part because of his religion.
Have a good day.
BDBopper:
I am in total agreement here. I want the feud to stop. I would really like to see Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney come together to help this along as well. We are having a battle, being fueled by the media (Remember it was the New York Times that started all of this back in December), and it iis in our best interest, the best interest of our party, and the best interest of the nation to put aside our ideological differences and come together for the betterment (spelling ?) of all.
TheValuesVoter:
I don’t know if anyone here is in contact with the Romney bloggers, but I want them to know that a lot of us, while continuing to oppose him as a candidate, just want to stop the fighting. The insults and name calling on both sides are old and we all need to stop it. We want to just peacefully coexist and stop shooting at each other. This is ugly and not benefiting anybody.
I’ve said before that McCain needs to find a way to be pro-McCain and not just anti-Obama. And in the same way, we all need to be pro-Mike and not so much anti-Romney. Even though we all have our opinions of both Obama and Romney.
And when we talk to the Romney folks, let’s take a break and talk about some things we can agree on. They like their guy and we like ours and there’s no middle ground there. But we pretty much all pay taxes, have families, want America to be strong, etc. We can strongly disagree to the core about our candidates but we shouldn’t be enemies.
In the race to 270 electoral votes the current count according to Electoral-Vote.com: Obama - 289, McCain - 249. We now have ourselves a ballgame!

Back in 2004 I followed the website Electoral-Vote.com religiously - morning, noon, and night. As you can see, and many of you probably already know, is that this site makes projections based on recent polling to predict the outcome of the elections. If you browse through the pages you’ll find a lot of info and resources for the upcoming elections. There are two things I recall from 2004 about the site. One, the owner is liberal, but is also nice guy and puts a lot of work into the site. Two, the polls tend to skew liberal. Not because of the sites owner but because of the actual polling. In 2004 the site predicted a win for John Kerry and the owner of the site was confident in that. But the numbers were actually quite different in several key states when the voters went to the polls.
Regarding the polling for this year: There is still plenty of time for it to change dramatically either way, so don’t place too much stock, hope or disappointment in the numbers. I would like to point out though that it has changed dramatically since mid-June from Obama 348 - McCain 194. Mostly the change happened because of VA and FL moving from blue to red.
One hope I have is that IF Romney is selected I believe he would actually help vastly in the very close states of NV, CO and NH. Even MI might be in the realm of possibility. And in contrary to what some Huckabites may say, I don’t think Romney loses any of the southern states for McCain.
Regardless of VP, I also have hope the outlook will continue to improve for McCain as we as a nation come to know Barack Obama a little bit more (the debates come to mind). As well as when we become a little more concerned about the cost of energy and foreign matters.
